The ONGC Community School is established in one of the remote locations of Sitapur, U.P., surrounded by lush green lands. It is a highly progressive and enterprising community school committed to providing quality education with great emphasis on traditional values. ONGC Community School is reinventing education by breaking the old patterns of thought. This progressive thinking has led to progressive teaching methods and has brought about a tremendous change in how the students learn and also in the community that they come from.
ONGC Community School is a CSR Project of ONGC Foundation established in the year 2013 with the support of ONGC. It is a CBSE affiliated (PG to XII standard), Co-educational English Medium School. The classrooms and teaching spaces are modern, large and extremely well equipped and resourced. The school has excellent infrastructure spread over more than 4 acres to facilitate extensive learning. The school also has an assembly ground, multipurpose room, auditorium and amphitheater and a vast area to play, with multiple playgrounds, passive sitting areas and shaded spaces for students to enjoy.
The school has been very successful in the promotion of girl child education; hence the girl child ratio is very good. The school is playing a pivotal role in the social and environmental awareness through various awareness campaigns like Swachhta Pakhwada, and ‘Say No to Single Use Plastic’ under the aegis of ONGC Foundation. The district topper of the session 2019-20 with a score of 97.80 hails from ONGC Community School and it is a very proud moment for the school and all other the stakeholders involved.
With the aim of providing quality education to poverty-stricken children in the age groups of 6-14 years, 480 One Teacher Schools have been set up in Odisha. This would make them self-sufficient to join the formal education system. Also, for the proper functioning of the school; books, pens, pencils, blackboards and other necessary stationeries were distributed, which would benefit around 14,400 children belonging to the socially and economically backward sections of the villages in Odisha.
As a result, the students would be more interested in attending schools with improved levels of attention. This will guide the students to develop a career path which will help them in shaping their futures. School drop-out rates in these regions would definitely reduce and a positive impact would be created. This project was successfully supported by ONGC Foundation.
Sarada Shishu Mandir, Bindole in Raiganj Block, Uttar Dinajpur District, West Bengal, provides facilities for a considerable number of SC/ST/OBC students (38% general, 39% SC, 2% ST, 17% ST of total 537 students) by imparting education at a nominal monthly fee. The school had started in the year 2007 with the primary block consisting of the 1st to 5th standard only.
ONGC Foundation had provided financial assistance for the construction of a building in this school to enhance the benefits of education for more students. In May 2018, with the implementation of this project, the Sarada Seva Trust, Suradashnapur, Raiganj, Uttar Dinajpur was able to construct the secondary section as well. This step has strengthened the education system in the rural area as secondary schools are hard to find there. Moreover, quality education is being provided to the children in the nearby areas of Raiganj block. Out of the total beneficiaries, around 67% belong to the SC/ST/OBC categories. Under this project, seven classrooms, one office room, one computer room, one vice principal’s room, one teacher’s room and two toilet blocks have been built for the students.
Value Education books named “You can be happy” has been designed and printed by Glory of India Trust for free distribution to the male and female students of classes 1 to 10 studying in the Kendriya Vidyalayas. This knowledge derived from value education will empower them towards a brighter future. ONGC Foundation has been very active in fulfilling this endeavor.
Another school building in Odisha is being constructed for accommodating around 965 students at Saraswati Shishu Mandir, Karanjia, Mayurbhanj, Odisha. Being a remote area, Karanjia hardly saw any proactive steps being taken to improve the state education. Another set of hurdles that the difficult terrain created was lack of skilled labour, transportation of furniture and distance from the state capital. The students belonging to the Scheduled Tribes from the nearby villages and districts will be greatly benefited due to the additional buildings in this school. Increasing the scope of accessing quality education, ONGC Foundation has been providing financial assistance for this project.
Bahona College is a NAAC accredited college affiliated to Dibrugarh University, Assam. The college is located in the interior areas which are majorly inhabited by the SC/ST community. With the aim to cater to the needs of the boys coming from Majuli island, Assam who belong to the lower socio-economic backgrounds and are not able to pay the high rent for PG accommodations, it was decided that a hostel should be constructed. This construction of the boy’s hostel is being supported by ONGC Foundation. As a result, the students will be saving time on travelling to and from their homes and they will even get food available in the mess. Further, they will have more study time which would definitely have a positive impact on their academic results.
Financial support has been extended for construction of an academic building and a hostel building at Saraswati Shishu Vidya Mandir, Diapadhala, Bhanjanagar, Ganjam District, Odisha. The goal is to construct the Dormitories, Library, and Recreational hall, Office Room, Kitchen, Store room, Dining Hall, Lobby area, Toilet Block and other supporting infrastructure. The agency will ensure that 25% seats are reserved exclusively for students from economically weaker sections, out of which 40% students (10% of total) would be provided hostel and mess facilities free of cost. The proposed academic building would be able to accommodate around 300 additional students while the hostel building would be able to accommodate 100 students.
The installation of 170 Swami Vivekananda Mini Smart Classrooms in 170 Adarsh Schools of Alwar, Rajasthan is directed towards providing interactive classroom-based teaching sessions using the mini smart classrooms.
The schools were chosen under the guidance of the District Education Officer. Each school is being provided with a 42-inch LED Screen, 1 Laptop, 1 UPS. Instructors from Ganeshi Lal Foundation are training the teachers on how to conduct classes through these mini smart classrooms with the help of teaching aids like audio-video content and PowerPoint presentations. The students and teachers are trying to make the best use of the mini smart classrooms and the school Principals have also appreciated the efforts. Almost 51,000 students in the government schools of Alwar will receive the benefits of these smart class rooms and their interest in studies and in gaining more knowledge will also increase rapidly. This programme is being assisted by ONGC Foundation to delve deeper into the field of quality education.
To improve the infrastructural and learning conditions of secondary schools of Golaghat and Sivasagar districts in Assam, The Energy and Resources Institute (TERI) has been actively engaged in the implementation of energy interventions in these schools. In order to pursue this initiative, TERI is in the process of installing Lithium battery based solar power plants in three secondary schools which were identified in the Golaghat and Sivasagar districts of Assam in consultation with the Secretary of Secondary Education, Govt. of Assam. The installation of solar power plants will enable the teachers to use advanced teaching methods which will eventually contribute to the significant increase in the students’ enrolment in the schools. This project is being implemented by the collaborative efforts of ONGC Foundation and TERI.
In the recent decades, empowerment of women, especially belonging to the SC/ST/OBC categories through education has been a priority. Anchalika Girls’ High school at Angul district, Odisha has been operating since 1992 to promote the education of women especially for those belonging to the SC/ST/OBC categories, In the year 2017, 254 (194,SC/ST/OBC) Students were studying in the school out of which only 213 stayed in the hostel. Every year 250 new students apply for admissions, but the school management committee was only able to provide accommodation to 70 new students. To resolve this crisis and promote the education of women, ONGC Foundation supported the school by providing financial aid for the construction of a Girls’ hostel that would help to accommodate 100 more students. This initiative encouraged more female students to enroll themselves in the school and eventually led to better outcomes in terms of women education and their empowerment.
In the efforts of providing better educational and infrastructural facilities to the students and staff of Saraswati Shishu Vidya Mandir, Dhalapur in Dhenkanal District of Odisha, ONGC Foundation financially assisted Shiksha Vikas Samiti, Odisha for the construction of 5 classrooms in the school. This was aimed to benefit 66 existing students of the school, including 3 SC/ST and 63 OBC students.
The University of Lucknow is one of the largest and prestigious universities of the country providing high quality education. ONGC supported and provide financial assistance for construction of “ONGC Centre for Advanced Studies” new academic block within existing campus of the university. The project worked in two phases (I phase- Aug,2014- & II Phase – Jan 2017-June 201 with total financial implication of 20 crore. It was suggested that all the courses being offered through center are relevant to upstream of Hydrocarbon that would lead to development of newer technology in the fields of Hydrocarbon energy and Geo-resources, which would eventually provide inherent input to national development both academically and technologically through establish institute. . The project has directly or indirectly benefiting the students belongs to operational areas as well as non-operational areas
ONGC Foundation has extended financial assistance in setting up of data center as a part of establishment of State of the Art- Knowledge Resource Center at Nagpur, Maharashtra. The major objective of project is to bring paradigm shift in research methodologies and philosophies to achieve Resurgence. Around 1000 Research students particularly who are underprivileged in terms of resource for research in field of agriculture, environment, public health and sanitation along with innovators and including 65 universities were beneficiaries of the project.
